MUSEUM

Dresden Transport Museum

Original name:
Verkehrs Museum Dresden

Locomotives and trams, cars, motorcycles, bicycles – everything that moves us, in the literal sense of the word – can be found and experienced in the Transport Museum, Dresden, from the ornate miniatures to the original giants weighing tons, like the legendary Saxon locomotive ‘Muldenthal’ from 1861. The museum is one of the few in Germany that exhibits every means of transport, apart from space travel. Visiting exhibitions, special shows of their own, educational courses and model railroads complement the extensive permanent exhibition. The roots of the Transport Museum in Dresden go back to the year 1877, which is when what would later become the Saxon Railroad Museum started its collection, which means that it is one of the oldest technical collections in Germany. The museum in the city center is housed in the ‘Johanneum’, which used to be the royal stables, adjacent to the rebuilt Baroque masterpiece Church of Our Lady. In 2003 the 12-millionth visitor was welcomed through its doors. - Saxon Steam
